SAFE Haven for Cats was recently featured in a news story on ABC11, shining a light on an important issue: social media pet scams.
While we love welcoming adopters to meet our wonderful cats, we were shocked when a visitor came to the shelter to pick up a Maine Coon cat that they put a deposit on — a cat we never had. Unfortunately, this visitor had been scammed. Watch this story about the scam.
We want to make sure all cat lovers know how to know it’s SAFE Haven you’re adopting from:
✅ SAFE Haven Adoption Policies
We never require or accept deposits, especially not through apps like Zelle, Venmo, or CashApp. We do not hold cats—they’re first-come, first-served.
✅ Know Where to Look
On our website, you can see how to find our shelter, what our hours are, and how to get in touch with questions. To adopt, fill out our adoption interest survey, and if approved, you can choose the cat or cats you want to meet and schedule an appointment to come meet with an adoption counselor. You’ll only pay an adoption fee once you’ve completed the visit to SAFE Haven.
✅ Stay local and adopt!
Remember, local shelters like SAFE Haven are full of amazing cats just waiting for loving homes — no shipping required, no fancy fees, no scams.
