A Broken Leg Doesn't Have to End the Story
It’s hard to imagine now, but just a few months ago, Macavity’s future looked very different.
When he arrived at SAFE Haven for Cats, he was sweet, affectionate, and eager to make friends. But our team quickly noticed something wasn’t right. He walked with an unusual sway. He struggled to get comfortable. Whenever he lay down, one of his back legs stuck awkwardly out to the side. An examination and X-rays revealed the heartbreaking truth.
He had learned to live with it. Because cats do that, they hide their pain. They adapt. They survive.
| But surviving isn't the same as living.
SAFE Haven chose a different path
We chose surgery. We chose recovery. We chose Macavity.
His damaged leg was removed, and one of our clinic team members opened her home to help him heal. As the pain faded, something remarkable happened. Macavity relaxed. For the first time in a very long time, he could be a cat. 80 days after arriving at SAFE Haven, he found a family of his own.
Today, Macavity is thriving on three legs
But not every story is finished
To see possibility instead of cost
To invest in healing
To believe a broken leg should never be a death sentence
This summer, SAFE Haven is raising $8,000 to help these cats
These important funds will help cover the cost of X-rays, surgeries, medications, and recovery care for cats like Macavity, Blitzle, and Stanky Leg.

Macavity: The Cat Who Finally Found Comfort
Age: 3 years old
Status: Adopted and thriving
Macavity first came to SAFE Haven through our clinic as a stray. He was incredibly friendly and quickly won over our team. But after intake, our Cat Care staff noticed something wasn’t right. He walked with an unusual sway. He struggled to get comfortable. Whenever he lay down, one of his back legs stuck awkwardly out to the side.
An examination and X-rays revealed an old femur fracture that had healed incorrectly. The bone had separated from the knee and was essentially “floating,” connected only by soft tissue.
The solution was amputation. After surgery, Macavity recovered at Julie’s home, one of our clinic team members. As he healed, his personality blossomed. For the first time, he could relax without pain.
Just 80 days after arriving at SAFE Haven, Macavity found his forever home. Today, he’s living proof that losing a leg doesn’t mean losing your quality of life.
Blitzle: The Cat Learning a New Way Forward
Status:Recovering from surgery
Blitzle came through our clinic for what should have been a routine spay surgery. During her recovery, our medical team noticed she wasn’t walking normally. Cats naturally walk on their toes, but Blitzle was putting weight on her entire paw and the back of her leg. X-rays revealed a badly healed ankle fracture. At only one year old, Blitzle had already learned to live with chronic pain.
Thanks to SAFE Haven supporters, she recently underwent leg amputation surgery and is now ready for adoption. Her story is still being written, but her future is already looking brighter.
Stanky Leg: The Cat Who Needs Answers
Age: Approximately 1 year old
Status:Awaiting diagnostics
Stanky Leg arrived at SAFE Haven in early June with a serious injury to one of his legs. Because he’s a shy guy who prefers to keep to himself, it took our team time to fully evaluate what was happening and determine the best path forward.
Today, Stanky Leg is on the road to recovery. His injured leg has been successfully removed, and he’s spending his days resting, healing, and enjoying plenty of TLC from our staff and volunteers. Despite his reserved nature, he still lets his personality shine through, especially at lunchtime when he becomes delightfully chatty.
Once he’s fully recovered, Stanky Leg will be ready to find the loving home he deserves. Like Macavity and Blitzle before him, he deserves the chance to live comfortably and pain-free. His next chapter depends on the care we can provide.
