Did You See? You Helped Save 10K Cats!

Picture of Black Cat With Pink Text - 10,000!

On March 16 we adopted our 10,000th kitty! If we weighed all these kitties, they would be about 40 tons – the average weight of a tractor-trailer. Talk about moving some fur! But really, it’s 10,000 lives saved, families made, and hearts melted with nuzzles from a forever friend. Read the whole story on our website.

If We Could Talk to the Animals…

Orange Tabby Laying In Bed With Mouth Open

Adult cats only meow at humans, not at other cats. Why? To tell us something we’re not picking up from their body language! Dr. Jennifer Bledsoe-Nix will help you better understand your kitty during our May 7 Cat Communication workshop. Save your seat now.

It’s Raining Kittens

Two Tabby Kittens And One Black Kitten

April means kitten season, a time when cat overpopulation grows and grows with each new litter. What should you do if you find abandoned kittens? First step: watch and wait. Click for the next step.

Give Our Helpers a Hand

National Volunteer Week is April 8-12 and it’s a great time for us to say thanks to our amazing volunteers that help with everything from working with our website to cleaning our kitty cages. As a small token of our appreciation, this week we’ll have food for our volunteers and there will even be giveaways. Know someone that volunteers with us? Say thanks! Click here to learn more about volunteering.

Easter Plants Mean Poison

Close Up of Easter Lilly

Lilies are a beautiful part of the Easter holiday but for your cat, they mean danger. All it takes is one drink of water from a vase of cut lilies for your furry friend to suffer. Learn more about these beautiful but deadly plants.

Other plants to look out for include azaleas, baby’s breath, and daffodils. Here’s a helpful list of plants to look out for so your kitty can stay safe and healthy.

Kittens Are Coming. Are You Ready?

Kittens Are Coming. Are You Ready?

Spring is upon us, and that means Kitten Season – a time when the number of homeless kittens drastically increases as new litters are born…and born…and born!

Lasting from April until the end of fall, this season brings challenges that require time and effort, but here’s how you can help: https://www.safehavenforcats.org/programs-and-services/services-for-strays/kitten-season/

The Fix

Two KittensWhat else can be done to help during Kitten Season? Spay or neuter your furry friends. By reducing the number of kittens born, we can reduce the number of cats euthanized unnecessarily. Click here for 4 myths about spaying and neutering.

This season, you can also spring into action with our low-cost neutering special for male cats. From March through April, we’re offering $25 surgeries for male cats and kittens. Take advantage of this special before time runs out: https://www.safehavenforcats.org/news/spring-into-action/

A #Twinning Celebration

A #Twinning Celebration

All of our SAFE Haven alumni are winners, but here’s a winning story perfect for March Madness.
Pippen, a 3-year-old Tuxedo cat adopted by Kathryn Fromson, was named the winner of a bracket-style contest to find a twin for Instagram cat Max (@mrpawsome). The contest, Max’s Annual #Twinning Tournament, doesn’t just give Pippen bragging rights. Pippen got a gift crate of cat goodies from KitNip Box, and SAFE Haven got a prize too – donations from our Amazon wishlist courtesy of the contest owner @MrPawesome!

In its second year, the contest is inspired by the rescue cat named Max that the account is dedicated to. The owner says that Max, who recently celebrated his 6th adopt-a-versary, helped them heal from the difficult and sudden loss of their cat Max. The contest also brings attention to cat rescues and the work they do.

Thank you to Max and family for the amazing donation and congratulations to Pippen for being a great lookalike for Max!

The side-by-side photo comparison. Can you tell the difference between the two?

Message from Pam Miller, Founder & President:

A quarter century of service to our community…and 40,000 lives saved – thanks to YOU!

Cats in Garage

To the right is a photo of the first four cats rescued by SAFE Haven! Yes, they are in our garage in the summer of 1994!

Incredibly, by the fall of 1996,
we had already been successfully incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for two years. During that time, we rescued 160 cats and kittens! In October of 1999, with the help of many volunteers and supporters, we moved out of our garage and opened the first permanent no-kill shelter in the Triangle. Shortly after, in 2001 we opened the SAFE Care Spay / Neuter Clinic – the first “just for cats” in North Carolina.

Now, let’s fast forward to today. By the time you read this newsletter, we will have adopted our 10,000th cat and sterilized the 30,000th cat in the SAFE Care Clinic. Between our Pet Food Pantry, Feline Fundamentals Education Series, extensive volunteer program, and community outreach we are helping thousands and thousands of people and pets yearly, thanks to you!.

Hard to believe that it all started in a 500 square foot garage!

This year, to celebrate and pay recognition to our shared success, we will be having many activities and events, so look for those and please join us whenever you can. Having lived every day of our 25-year journey, I know that it could never have happened without the friendship and generosity of our donors, adopters, volunteers, and friends.

In this newsletter, you can read about some of the wonderful cats who have new homes, those still waiting for their perfect home, and our upcoming Tuxedo Cat Ball. Thank you for helping each of us save lives. I sincerely hope you are pleased with our shared, lifesaving progress.

With gratitude for each one of you,

Pamela Miller
Founder & President
