Local Shelter Cats Want to Help Federal Dogs!

SAFE Haven for Cats would like to help federal employees who might be struggling to feed their dogs due to the shutdown.

Our shelter kitties worry about their federal canine friends and suggested the SAFE Haven Pet Food Pantry assist in whatever way they can.

This is a special, one-time only distribution, and we will discontinue once we give away all available food.

You must be prepared to show a valid federal ID and complete a short survey.  Please contact Gina Jennings at gina@safehavenforcats.org to arrange a time and date for distribution. The subject line of your email must read “PFP for Federal Employees.” You must email Gina to be considered.

This is a dog food distribution event only at this time. Our cat food reserves are low, and we definitely welcome any donations!

SAFE Haven appreciates all of our federal employees and wants to help in whatever it can during this difficult time.

We Support Our Stars & Stripes!

We Support Our Stars & Stripes!

At SAFE Haven, we support our Stars and Stripes.

There’s no way we can fully say thank you to the more than 112,951 active military and over 790,000 veterans who have served the United States and call North Carolina home. There aren’t enough words.

What we can do is offer our military cat lovers a special Stars & Stripes package in appreciation for your service.

When you mention the Stars & Stripes Package during scheduling and show us your military ID, you will pay only $25 for the spay/neuter surgery package, which includes an exam, pain medication, microchipping, and vaccines.

Spaying and neutering cats can help reduce the population of more than 100,000 cats living without a home in the Triangle. Fighting to reduce this number is a major part of our mission. We support spay/neuter as a means to control overpopulation and reduce euthanasia among cats.

Call 919.872.7730 and tell us you want the Stars & Stripes Package.

The Fine Print: Discount only provided when valid US Military ID presented at check-in. Limit 2 cats per military ID. SAFE Care reserves the right to decline surgery on a cat with significant risk factors (age, weight, chronic conditions). Offer expires on December 31, 2019.

Community Cats ❤ Community Support

Community Cats ❤ Community Support

Community cats need community support and one of the best ways to help cat colonies is Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release, or TNVR.

There are four steps in the process:

  • Trap: Using safe and humane traps, feral and free-roaming cats are captured and taken to local clinics like ours.
  • Neuter: The cats are spayed or neutered to help break the cycle of unwanted births and colony growth. During surgery, the cat will also be ear-tipped; the small missing section of the ear signals that he or she has been altered.
  • Vaccinate: The cats are given vaccines to help reduce the spread of diseases, protecting other feral cats and any feline pets that may be exposed.
  • Release: After the cat has recovered from its surgery, the cat can be taken back to its cat colony or a safe location.

For more information on the process, to rent humane traps, or watch helpful videos about TNVR, visit our clinic website

Meet Our Beautiful Rose

Meet Our Beautiful Rose

Rose’s arrival at SAFE Haven was a little different than most our cats. She was trapped by a local county shelter as a feral and, unexpectedly, gave birth in the trap. The shelter was in a difficult position. They had to find an organization willing to take in a feral mom and her kittens who faced euthanasia if no commitment was made. Fortunately, one of our regular foster families enjoys the challenge of helping a feral mom and her kittens.

Rose and her 4 kittens arrived at SAFE Haven and we immediately noticed something odd. The newborn kittens were little hissy spitfires but mom was very subdued and allowed basic handling. She was clearly very scared but did not show signs of a truly feral nature. We sent the little family to their new foster home.

Her kittens quickly matured into happy and healthy little ones and are now in their forever homes. Rose seemed to withdraw more and more once she was back from foster so the decision was made to send her back to one of our best behavioral fosters. Thanks to her time with fosters, Rose now loves attention; you can even hear her purr now.

Because of her background, Rose would do best in a quieter home with no small children as she’s not really a lap cat. Her ideal forever family would be very understanding and willing to continue the behavioral work started with our fosters. Could you be that family?

See more cats, like Rose, who are waiting for you!
