Meet the SAFE Haven Team – Maddie

We’re delighted to welcome our new Director of Development Maddie Majerus to SAFE Haven! With a background in nonprofit work and focus in community engagement, she looks forward to expanding the SAFE Haven network of friends and getting folks connected with adoptable cats.

Get to know Maddie:

Why did you choose SAFE Haven for Cats as your next job?
Everyone on the team clearly loves their job and is dedicated to the mission. I wanted to help contribute to the good works SAFE has been doing over the years.

What are you looking forward to as a new employee of SAFE Haven?
I’m looking forward to meeting everyone involved with making SAFE Haven the phenomenal shelter it is and helping SAFE continue to thrive and expand.

What do you love about cats?
I love their personalities and their companionship.

Do you have a cat?
I have an 11-year-old, long-haired Tortie named Meeko – her true passions are hoodie strings and giving head bonks for attention.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love making stained glass and fiber art, reading, caring for my house plants, and checking out new coffee shops and bakeries with friends. I’m always looking for book recommendations, so please send yours along!

The Purr Cup Cafe Scrapbook

The Purr Cup Cafe Scrapbook

Since they started in October 2020, Purr Cup Cafe has helped to find homes for 279 cats and counting! Here’s a look back at some of the cats who have gotten to call the cat room their temporary home.

The Triangle’s first cat cafe, they chose SAFE Haven to partner with and our cats are the featured residents and cuddlers. When you reserve time in the cat room, you can get to know our special kitties while enjoying a cup of joe or yummy matcha latte.

We’re so grateful for all they do and proud to continue our partnership. Visit their website for complete details on their hours, special events and how to book your time in the cat room.

Clear the Shelter With Us
We have so many cats to find homes for and we need your help to Clear the Shelter! On Friday, August 11, all kitties will go home for only $5. Adoptions will be on a first-come, first-served basis but there will be a lot of amazing cats waiting for you. Click here to get the info you need about this one-day-only special!

Can’t adopt right now? You can still support us with a donation! We’re trying to raise $3,000 by Sunday, August 20. That means 30 cats can be cared for while we find them their purr-fect home. Click here to make your donation now!

1300 and Still Counting!
SAFE Haven is adopting out cats at a record pace and Wayne Whiskers was number 1,300 of 2023! A special mature kitty, Wayne came to us from a colony in Knightdale. A SAFE Haven champion found him and knew we could help him. Thanks to medical care and love from our awesome foster Jacqui, Wayne – now known as Cheddar – found a wonderful home. Read his story and learn more about how you can become a SAFE Haven foster to help kitties like this one!

Shout Outs

Thank you to John Alan Barrie from Troop 141 in Rolesville, who completed his Eagle Scout project and helped the cats at SAFE Haven all at the same time! John and others from Troop 141 delivered 12 amazing cat trees that are super safe and sturdy for kitties who love to jump. We appreciate everyone who worked to make this project a success!

A BIG thank you to HireLevel for naming us their charity of the month! Not only did members of HireLevel get to come and present a check – they got to experience the adorableness of our cats firsthand.

What to Expect at Clear the Shelters

What to Expect at Clear the Shelters

SAFE Haven is hosting a Clear the Shelters event on August 11 from 11 am to 5 pm. During this “Felines for Five” event, adoption fees are only $5!

It is going to be a busy day. Here are some things you need to know.

  • Prepare for the heat. We will only be able to allow a certain number of people in our shelter at a time. We have tents and chairs set up outside our shelter and are providing water throughout the day. We will also have free snacks and games for the kids.

  • When you arrive, we will have volunteers on hand to help you fill out an adoption interest survey, answer your questions and get you in the “queue” to visit the cats. You can complete an adoption interest survey in advance online.

  • We will be updating adoptions as they happen. You can meet the cats online but keep in mind that our website might not update immediately.

  • You must be 21 years or older to adopt.

  • Bring a plastic carrier if you have one; a top-loading carrier is best but not required. No cardboard carriers, please. We will have carriers for sale and short-term rental at the event.

  • The adoptions on Clear the Shelters day will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. But don’t worry – we have lots of wonderful cats available throughout the day.

  • We cannot hold any cats/kittens on Clear the Shelters day. All adoptees must leave the shelter that day at the time of adoption.

  • Although we are reducing our adoption fees for Clear the Shelters, we do have cat toys and supplies available for purchase. In addition, we welcome your donations. We take cash, checks, and all major credit cards.

  • If we CLEAR THE SHELTER before we are scheduled to close at 5 pm, we will use social media and our website to let everyone know!

  • The staff and volunteers at SAFE Haven for Cats are here to help you find your next wonderful family member. We want to give everyone the individual attention they need. Your patience and courtesy are much appreciated!

#KumquatStrong

Some cats uniquely capture our hearts. Kumquat has been one of those kitties! Our team had its work cut out for them to save his life, but this little one is on his way to a bright future. His resilience inspires us. Read his story.

What a Drive!

Thank you to everyone who donated food and supplies to help stock our Pet Food Pantry. Whether you visited our little pink tent or donated online, your donations totaled 680.88 lbs. of wet food, 1,440.62 lbs. of dry food, and a whopping 106 pounds of cat litter! On behalf of pets across our community – we thank you.

Who Gives a Hoot?
Thanks to the Greater Raleigh Area Women Who Give a Hoot for donating $3,000 to SAFE Haven this spring. This local giving circle “utilizes the power of collective giving to support local nonprofits and change lives.” We were grateful for the opportunity to present all our work to and connect with these generous women.

Feeling Fit & Feline
Did you know a cat should have at least 30 minutes of play per day? We have some great tips for how to keep your cat active and prevent boredom:

    • Cat toys let kitties get in touch with their inner hunter. Pick from fun options like simple feather dancers or fancy toys that make noise.
    • Scratching posts can make sure those claws are sharp without using your furniture to let cats climb and play safely in your sight.
    • Cat grass, a safe and non-toxic plant, occupies cats while aiding digestion.
